A Bible Verse For Heartbreak

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3, NIV)

Have you ever felt brokenhearted?

Many of us have experienced this at some point in life. It is a painful feeling that your heart has been shattered into pieces—like an emotional wound that throbs with every breath. The pain is raw, heavy, and often lingers long after the initial hurt.

This brokenness is often caused by:

  • The loss of a loved one

  • Fractured or broken relationships

  • Shattered dreams

  • Betrayal by someone close to you

  • A serious health crisis

The Psalmist describes this state by using the Hebrew term שׁבר | shabar. This word can be translated as “to break in pieces” or “to shatter.” It describes a heart that feels deeply fractured and emotionally broken.

This psalm was written as God’s people returned from exile in Babylon to Jerusalem. Jerusalem had been their center of worship, the place where they drew close to God. Yet for years they had lived with broken hearts—first watching their city fall, then enduring the pain of exile far from home, family, and familiar places of worship. Even after returning, the emotional scars of loss and displacement remained.

In the midst of their pain, the Psalmist paints a picture of God:

01 | He heals the brokenhearted. God heals people’s shattered hearts.

02 | He binds up their wounds. God tenderly cares for the deep, internal wounds we carry.

Your broken heart is real, but it does not have to stay broken forever.

When we are brokenhearted, it is easy to:

01 | Become closed-hearted, not allowing anyone in.

02 | Become calloused-hearted, no longer believing there is hope for new relationships or new dreams.

03 | Become withdrawn-hearted, losing ourselves in our pain and shrinking back from fully living in our identity and purpose.

Can I encourage you today?

Don’t close your heart.

Don’t believe the lie that there is no hope for new things in your life.

Don’t shut down or minimize who you are and what you are called to do in this world.

Instead, open your broken heart to God. Allow Him to come in, begin the healing, and tenderly care for every wound.

You can experience a healed and fully alive heart again.

There are Better Days Ahead.
