A Bible Verse For Grief

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. (Isaiah 53:3, ESV)

We all know what grief feels like—that emotion that arises whenever we experience loss in our lives. A deep, soul-level sadness. A feeling of shock. Numbness from the heavy waves of emotion. Regret over the things you said or did not say. Being overwhelmed by the future. Bouts of anxiety or panic.

  • We feel it when someone we love dies.

  • We feel it when a relationship is ruptured.

  • We feel it when we have to move away from a community of people we love.

  • We feel it when we leave a job we were passionate about.

  • We feel it when we experience a prolonged health condition.

Isaiah 53 describes Jesus as “acquainted with grief.” He knew this emotion too. While Jesus was on earth, many of the very people He created despised and rejected Him. Can you imagine that sense of grief? He had left heaven to come to earth to redeem those people. He loved them and wanted to repair the broken relationship that human sin had caused. He wanted to show them who God was in the flesh and what God would do to save them through His death. And many of the people at that time rejected Him. As a result, He felt a deep sense of grief—a level of grief that you and I could not possibly ever experience. I say that not to minimize our pain, but rather to emphasize the fact that He was God in the flesh, experiencing a level of pain beyond human comprehension.

Do you want to know what that means for you and me when we experience grief?

01 | It means that Jesus understands your grief. He experienced it too.

02 | It means that Jesus knows how to encourage your soul when it feels grief. He knows what you need when you feel the pain of grief.

03 | It means that you have a relatable Savior you can honestly process your grief with in prayer.

Can I encourage you to begin practicing these two responses to grief…

01 | Talk to God about your grief. Share your emotions. Share your thoughts. Cry out for help.

02 | Invite Him into your pain. Allow Him to minister to your grief-stricken heart. To comfort you. To encourage you. To give you strength when you have lost it. To give you hope when you feel paralyzed by your pain.

Jesus is well-acquainted with grief. And He understands your grief.

You have a God who cares.

There Are Better Days Ahead.
